Chilhowee Pork Producer Receives MPA Chairman’s Award

Phil Howerton awarded for commitment to the pork industry.

Columbia, Mo.,–Kathy Chinn, immediate past chairman of the Missouri Pork Association (MPA), presented the annual Chairman’s Award to Phil Howerton, a pork producer from Chilhowee, Missouri, during the 2007 Missouri Pork Expo on February 22.

Each year, the MPA Chairman presents the award to a person or an industry member for their support of the Association and its members.

The Howerton family’s involvement in the pork industry dates back generations. Phil has been a partner in J.D. Howerton & Sons since 1977. The current operation involves his dad J.D., brother Jim and Phil’s two sons Nick and Paul in what can truly be described as a family enterprise. The business currently owns 750 acres and has a 1,000 sow farrow to finish operation.

He has been a member of the Henry County Pork Producers, Missouri Pork Association, and National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) since 1976, and has been the Board chairman and treasurer of MPA. Phil has chaired a variety of MPA committees, ranging from Research to Education to Government and Public Policy. He has also served on a variety of committees and task forces with the NPPC. He is currently serving his first term as a Missouri Agricultural and Small Business Development Authority (MASBDA) commissioner, and is the MPA representative for the U.S. Meat Export Federation.

“I applaud Phil for his commitment to the industry and the organization,” said Chinn. “He is one that you can always count on to get things done and he has certainly been a pleasure to work with.”

The 2007 Missouri Pork Expo was held February 21-23 in Columbia. Pork producers from across the state enjoyed a trade show, producer education sessions, and guest speakers.

The Missouri Pork Association represents the state’s pork producers in the areas of promotion, research, education and legislation.
