Explore the Swine Industry Through the 2007 University of Missouri Youth Pork Institute

High school students learn about pork production and compete for two $500 college scholarships.

Columbia, Mo.,—Are you interested in the future of pork production, new technologies, or want to be a leader in the pork industry and are still in high school? Then the 2007 University of Missouri Pork Institute is your answer.

The Pork Institute will be held June 11-13 on the MU campus. The registration fee of $100 covers materials, meals, dormitory lodging (air-conditioned, Virginia Avenue dormitory) and planned field trips. As an attendee, you are responsible for your travel costs to and from Columbia.

Space is limited to 15 students—everyone is encouraged to apply. A selection committee of university faculty and leaders in the pork industry will screen the applicants. The 2007 applications must be postmarked by May 1. Results of the selection process will be announced May 8.

Some of the planned activities include: tours of the MU Swine Farm, vet college diagnostics lab and the Missouri Pork Association headquarters. There will also be a field trip to Premium Standard Farms for tours of a sow facility, finishing facility and a packing plant. Prior to leaving, participants will take a written exam. The top two highest-scoring individuals will each earn a $500 college scholarship.

If you have any questions or would like to apply, do not hesitate to contact Dr. Marcia Shannon with the University of Missouri-Columbia at (573) 882-7859 or via email at Carlsonm@missouri.edu, or the Missouri Pork Association at (573) 445-8375 or at intern@mopork.com.
