Smith and Crouch Named 2012 Pork Institute Scholars

Columbia, Mo.,— The 2012 University of Missouri Pork Institute, sponsored by the University of Missouri and the Missouri Pork Association, was held June 11 through June 13 in Columbia. The Institute was a three day educational event for high school students interested in the pork industry.

Students enjoyed a tour of Triumph Foods, a processing plant in St. Joseph, Missouri and attended many educational sessions. They were also introduced to a variety of opportunities within the pork industry. At the end of their trip, students took a written exam covering all of the information learned. The students with the top two scores were awarded a scholarship.

On June 13, CeCe Leslie, Student Recruitment Director for CAFNR, awarded Megan Smith and Julie Crouch each a $500 scholarship to attend the University of Missouri upon completion of high school. Megan resides in Cabool, Missouri and will graduate from Cabool High School in 2015. Julie resides in Lincoln, Missouri and will graduate from Lincoln R-2 High School in 2014.

Other students attending the event include Jonah Barry of Clarence; Loren Belshe of Henley; Austin Boland of Sweet Springs; Ben Brandt of Linn; Tanner Brundage of Jefferson City; Alex Buschjost of Jefferson City; Nicole Clark of Linn; Brandy Hall of Foley; Laine Hays of Monroe City; Michaela Heembrock of St. Clair; Joseph Limbach of Eugene; Olivia Loges of Sweet Springs; Tony Morgan of Lamar; Ariella Morrow of Jonesburg and Kaila Stefka of Linn.

Also attending were Stephanie Deeken of Linn, Jessie Fowler of Vandalia, and Hailee Miller of Nevada. They are serving as 2012 Missouri Pork Association Youth Pork Ambassadors.
